Client purpose
Bodegas Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos (EDH), has a family link that goes back to 1822 and the winemaking company founded by Pedro Domecq Lembeye in Jerez de la Frontera. They are currently in the process of digitizing the winery. To do so, they want to rely on data, but first they need to understand what they have, how they can organize it, so they can begin to tackle the most immediate initiatives with the data they have.
The next step is to understand and decide what to incorporate in order to achieve new and more complex initiatives in the future.
At this point, we started our conversations, with the goals of supporting them in the analysis of their current data set-up, understanding their company business operations to design an appropriate solution and suggesting how to structure data as a whole, as well as guide them on how to overall manage data.
How we navigate it
After our first session, it wasn’t possible to fully understand the complexity of all the systems involved nor all details about what is necessary and how to address it.
Being so, we suggested an initial assessment to clearly understand the current system, the operations functionality and the overall company needs.
Having this in mind, we suggested an hour bank divided in four topics:
- Understand company’s needs:
- Go through company’s business areas and understand what relevant data is produced.
- Identify Data gaps: necessary data that is not being properly produced and/or stored.
- Assess existing data flows and reports:
- In the business areas where data is being processed and reported, understand implemented solution.
- Define one (or more) possible solutions:
- If possible, suggest ways of filling data gaps (how could we start producing, processing data in “blind” business areas).
- Define data architecture, flow and reporting solutions that meet all mapped necessities.
- Explore possible technologies to address the solution proposed.
- Documentation and technologies suggestion:
- Document the existing architecture, data flows and reports.
- Document existing needs, gaps, suggested architecture and best practices.
- Provide suggestions on what technologies and tools are appropriate considering different needs.
Where it took us
Carrying out the assessment detailed above.

How to change an entire data strategy
I imagine 8wires as that sincere and honest partner that takes you out of all that noise and helps you focus on what is important, no matter how unsexy it may be, to achieve a great long-term goal.
The one who accompanies you through the hard times and helps you through the tough decisions, knowing that there is no easy road. The one who gives you the push or the tools so that you climb and be yourself the one who reaches the summits you propose in a healthy, sustainable and energetic way. And above all, the one who steps aside when he knows that he is not helping you or that he will not be able to give you what you need.
I don't know if it is helpful, but somehow I saw on the web a visual explanation of the problem in the data/technology world (I don't know if with this metaphor) before showing how it is to work with us and finally, another visual explanation of the result.
Like a bridge over troubled waters
